This is what young Afrikaans guys in the Army, Air Force and Navy told me when I first came to South Africa in 1981 and I joined the Navy. This was my first introduction which showed me that something was not right in this country.
I was too young to fully appreciate the importance of what they told me. As a believer in a meritocracy, I did not like what I heard. But I tried to live my life ignoring this fact. However, almost 40 years later … I now realise it was the truth … the real truth.
